Characteristics to look for when buying a hunting knife

If you are someone who is looking for a hunting knife then you must know that there is a lot of variety available in the market and also online. You will definitely be spoilt for choice when you venture out exploring your options. There are certain things which make a hunting knife perfect and you must know these characteristics before you go out for the purchasing or selection process. The following are some characteristics to look for when buying a hunting knife.

There are two main parts of a hunting knife and they are-the blade and the handle. Each of these parts is further divided into sub-parts. A blade has a point, a grind, a spine and a choil various the handle has a bolster, finger groove, tang and butt. Make sure the knife you buy has each of these parts.

The Blade

When it comes to the blade, you must select the tip which is the point carefully. Some commonly purchased points include clip point, tanto and drop point. However hunting knives with gut hook point are most common. It can split the skin of the animals when gutting and field dressing.  The grind which is the bevel must have a severe angle since such knives prove to be the sharpest.  The spine is the back of the knife blade and it is better to look for a hunting knife with a thick spine since these are the strongest. Lastly, the choil is the unsharpened section which is used to grip it.  The choil you select must match the size of your fingers.

The Handle

The bolster of the handle prevents your fingers from slipping from it.  Thus select a hunting knife from the handle of which your hand doesn’t slip.  The finger groove part of the handle also relates to the grip and like the choil, select one which fits properly in your hands. Another part of the handle is the tang.  Tang is the part where the blade stops and the handle extends.  This part determines the strength of the knife and it is best if you buy a knife with one full tang and not pieces of it. The last part of the handle of a hunting knife is the butt.  It is the bottom part of the knife and must be such that it prevents your hand from slipping off.

Now that you know the various characteristics of a hunting knife, you will find it easier to buy one for yourself. If you are looking for hunting knives or pocket knives in Maryland (MD), then you can contact E-Turkey Creek Co.
